I have watched one too many true crime shows in my life, and because of that, I am always looking for a good mystery or myth to bust. In this blog, I really wanted to break down the common digital marketing myths we often hear in our field from potential clients. If you aren’t familiar with the world of digital marketing, there can be a lot of unknowns but hopefully, by debunking some of these statements we can shed some light on the truth about digital marketing. 

No good mystery is solved without a little hard evidence, so without further ado, I will make my case against these 5 common myths. 

It Isn’t Affordable 

One of my favorite digital marketing myths to debunk is the idea that all businesses can’t afford to use digital marketing. The truth is, digital marketing is for businesses of all sizes. In fact, in some ways, online advertising can actually level the playing field for small businesses because there is no minimum fee to start running ads and no set-up fees. Everyone already has the tools and resources to start making your business known, making digital marketing the most affordable option. 

Advertising on social platforms also gives you the best bang for your buck. I wrote about this one time when explaining 5 reasons to use digital marketing. Because there is so much flexibility in posting, starting, and stopping campaigns you can put money toward things that are working with the freedom to stop at any point. 

Digital marketing doesn’t need to be prioritized 

Wrong. If there was ever a time to start marketing digitally, it is now. Did you know that the average American has access to more than ten connected devices in their household? The world has gone digital whether we want to admit it or not, which means being present online is so important and worth prioritizing. The planning and preparation are well worth it if you want to grow your audience and business as a whole! You will only see the results you want when you prioritize getting them. 

Having a website is enough to market my business

While a website is a foundational aspect of digital marketing, that alone cannot get the job done. It is just one tool in your toolbox of overall marketing, and your customers must first be able to find it. Without any other form of digital marketing, it will be harder for people to find you, and a website that nobody sees is almost as bad as not having one at all. In the digital age we live in, this is a great place to begin, but it can’t be where your marketing stops. 

We know that that requires a lot of time and effort, but thankfully there are options for you. Whether you choose to work with an agency like us to help you or find your own online resources, digital marketing shouldn’t be a burden. 

The audience is too big to market online 

Many people assume because the online world is packed with people, that would make it hard to market your product or service. But in reality, that is exactly why you should market through digital platforms. All of your potential customers are on there, and the digital avenues for marketing give you the capability to target them specifically. Whatever the demographic is you need to reach, this is how you find them. 

Traditional advertising, while useful, doesn’t give you the same kind of control over who is seeing your message. You can only hope that the postcards, radio ads, or billboards are reaching individuals but with digital ads, you can be confident!

Putting content out there without a plan is good enough 

Even if a business does have a social media presence, oftentimes they think that is enough. While that is a good place to start, if there is no plan or purpose behind doing the things that you do, odds are you will not see any real change in your business. That’s almost like buying a pair of running shoes and expecting to be able to run a half marathon the next day. If there are no real goals and strategies in place, individuals shouldn’t expect to see results.
