topic cluster

Deciding which topics to blog about on your website can be difficult and time-consuming, but implementing content creation using topic clusters can make it much easier! Let me explain.

What Are Topic Clusters?

Topic clusters are targeted clusters (groups) of relevant content that cover a specific topic in depth. For example, let’s imagine I sell a health food supplement. Topic cluster topics could include blog subjects like:

  • Why my health food supplement is superior…
  • What ingredients does my health food supplement contain…
  • Why are those ingredients beneficial to my body… (could even expand into detail about each of the main ingredients)
  • When is the best time to consume my health food supplement and why?
  • Tips for incorporating my health food supplement into my daily routine.
  • What effects should I feel after consuming my health food supplement?
  • How was the idea of my health food supplement born?

And the list could go on and on! That was 7 blog topics that I thought of in less than 2 minutes. Take a step back from your product or service and think like your audience. What questions do they have? What do they not know that they should know about your business? Notice how all of my blog topics listed above revolve around the same focus which is my health food supplement. That is a topic cluster.

Why Should I Use Topic Clusters?

Fresh Content

Search engines love fresh content and one of the simplest ways to keep your site “fresh” and up-to-date is blogging. One blog a month is enough and more if you are able. The nagging question is “What do I write about?” Creating content around topic clusters will save you time and energy because you have a plan. You are deep diving into topics you already know in your business and explaining them in a simpler and easy-to-read format.

Topical Relevance

Topical Relevance is a very important factor in search engine optimization. Search engines want to know that the content on your website is actually related to your keywords and your business. In other words, don’t just blog to add content but instead add relevant content! When search engines see that all of your keywords and content are consistently related (more on HOW to do this below-it is very easy!) it builds your site authority. When search engines realize that all of your topics are connected and relevant, they are more likely to show your content.

Positions You As the Expert

As a business owner or seasoned employee, you are an expert in your field. Make sure that your audience knows this! Creating valuable content that answers the common questions from your customers not only positions you as an expert in your field, but increases the confidence others have in your product or service!

An Addition to Your Digital Marketing Efforts

A well-thought-out blog can be a huge asset to your digital marketing campaign. Your email subscribers should receive it in their inbox, your website visitors can peruse the content on your site, and sharing it on social media platforms is a no-brainer!  Did you know that marketers that prioritize blogging see 13-times the ROI of businesses that don’t?

Content Creation Using Topic Clusters Step By Step

Once you have completed your keyword research on the best keywords for your website pages, begin to deep dive into those topics and create a list of blog topics. You do not want to repeat your main keyword but instead, expand on it. (If Health Food Supplement is your main keyword, then your blog topic key phrases would be “Health food supplement ingredients” or “Best time of day to take Health Food Supplement” etc.)

Write your blog post. Remember that search engines read search queries, but humans read your content. Be sure to make it flow, be clear and concise, and give value to the reader. Please use spell check too!  When you format your content, you will want to make sure you are blog writing with SEO in mind and use headers in your content.

Finally, before publishing your blog, be sure to include links within your content to your other blogs or website page. Make sure the links you add are natural progressions from the subjects you mention. For example, in the paragraph above you will see that when I mentioned blog writing with SEO in mind, I hyperlinked my previous blog that tells you how to write a blog with SEO.

Publish your new blog! Be sure to email it to your subscribers and share it on all your social media platforms!
